The results from the poll show that most of you felt there were too many forums. The most popular choice, by far, was to consolidate them into chassis type, so that's what I've done.
Please let me know if you find any problems or I missed anything.
Thanks to Eric, for giving me a little kick and getting me started on the conversion.

| Hi guys. New to the site. I've got a nice little black 97 Cobra that I've had almost 7 years. I bought it from a guy in Bellvue that had already done expensive suspension mods, hard pan, frame braces, pro slot rotors, 373's bassani cross pipes after factory headers, Cora R rims etc etc. A NICE little car that we've put about 80K on since I bought it with 55K on the ODO. I've maintained it meticulously, and to this point never a problem ( Ford replaced the motor @ 29K for the origional owner after it spun a rod bearing, so overall the engine has about 110K, while the drive train has about 145K) I've run red Line in the motor, and Redline products in the tranny and rear end. I run it up and spin the motor hard when warm occassionally, but no power shifts or big smoking burnouts ( too much abuse at my age) Anyways, my question.......... Today on the way back from dropping my son and his girlfriend off at the airport going down I-5 I lost 5th gear. It acted like it had jumped out of gear, so I clutched it, put it back into 5th, and NOTHING......... It has the Pro 5 linkage and has ALWAYS shifted VERY smoothly and positively. In short order the tranny started making noise in 4th and vibrating the shift knob. By the time I got home another 20 miles it makes BAD noises all gears, and no reverse. Of course, NO ONE was open on the way through town today, so I had little choice but to limp it home. This SOUNDS and FEELS expensive. My guess is ( obviously) a catastrophic failure of a gear/ synchro/ fork/ whatever, that has taken out the whole gear cluster. I don't have the time or desire to replace or repair the tranny myself, so I'll probably have AAMCO or the local Ford dealership do it. Is there a stronger gear set I can drop in? What's your experiences with AAMCO etc? And ballpark, how much $$$$ is this going to be?? I'd appreciate your thoughts. Thanks |

I don't think I'd have a Ford Dealer OR the local AAMCO do this work. Regarding the Ford Dealer - it's just too expensive to go that route, unless you're trying to preserve an extended warranty of some kind, and need to have the work done only by an authorized repair facility. AAMCO - I am sure they'll beg to differ, but in my experience most transmission shops specialize in automatic transmissions, and the manual tranny work just gets farmed out to some other place. I'd be leery of the resulting quality of work. First - I have to say that there simply must be a Mustang shop near your location. What city are you in? Maybe we can help you find a place. Next - you can get a good idea of how much it'd cost to simply replace the entire transmission by calling Hanlon Motorsports or D&D - they both specialize in the manual transmissions you'd find in late model Mustangs/Cobras. Hanlon Motorsports website is at: http://www.hanlonmotorsports.com Hanlon shows a full rebuild kit for a T-45 at $375. If you took that option you'd pay a local shop to R&R the transmission and do a benchtop rebuild. Or, if you call them you can find out what they have for already-rebuilt transmissions that you can simply have shipped to a local shop. My guess is about $200 to R&R the transmission, and about $1000 for a rebuilt one. (Those numbers may be wildly inaccurate!) You may also want to talk to them about replacing your Borg Warner built T-45 with a later Tremec built T-45, which is supposed to be somewhat stronger (Tremec bought out the division of BW that made T-45s and moved production to Mexico around 1999). D&D Performance is the other place I'd check: http://www.ddperformance.com Oh, and maybe it'd be a good time, if you already have a modified car, to put in a T-56 6-speed instead of replacing the T-45? Then you'd have an ultra-OD 6th gear for economy. Or, you could run very high ratio rear gearing and still have a reasonable overdrive. Best regards, SoCal94 |

Thanks for the Info! It turned out pretty well. Unbelievably, I found a very low mile T45 out of a 4.6 4valve Cobra in my area for $650. Once I checked it out, a new clutch, throwout etc etc and a trip down to a mechanic friend had me up and going for a total of $1400 tranny price included. Not bad really. Stuck the Pro 5 back on, and it's just noticeably nicer and tighter everywhere. Can't really blame the origional tranny, the car is FUN to mash on, and 145K of demand is probably not bad life. Again, Thank you, Rich |
