Rules of the SCOA Mailing List

These rules only exist for the purpose of making the
SCOA List a little more enjoyable for everyone.

The bottom line is to use common sense and be
considerate of other people.

All members will be responsible for knowing the rules of this mailing list. Please take the time to review these rules carefully. In most cases you will be first given a warning. A warning will be a posted to the list so that all subscribers are aware of the rule violation. If you continue to break the rules of the mailing list, expect to be given suspension. If you are put on suspension you will be unsubscribed from the list for a duration of at least 5 days.

If you are a subscriber, and you feel that another subscriber has violated any of these rules, please notify the list owner so that the appropriate action can be taken.

Please contact the list owner if you have any questions about any of this.

>RULE #1: No flaming.

There will be absolutely no flaming on the mailing list. There will be no name calling on this mailing list. If you even call someone "stupid", you will be in violation of this rule and be given a 5-day suspension. We are very serious about this rule. There are NO EXCUSES for using the mailing list to flame anybody. This is not an elementary school playground, so lets act like adults.  Arguing your views and opinions is acceptable.  Calling someone names because you disagree with them is flaming.  Racial slurs are considered flames and will result in immediate removal.

Discipline:
First violation: 5 days suspension.
Excessive violations: Indefinite removal from the list.

RULE #2: Do not send "test" messages to the list.

Do not use the mailing list as a place to send test messages.   If you just want to check that your e-mail is going out, try sending an e-mail to yourself.  If you want to be sure you are able to post to the list, wait until you have something appropriate to post.

Discipline:
First violation: 5 days suspension.
Subsequent violations: 5 days suspension.

RULE #3: Do not forward a private e-mail to the entire list.

There is nothing wrong with forwarding an e-mail to the mailing list if you believe that it will be informative to others.  This rule is in place to discourage people from forwarding a private e-mail message from another list member to the entire mailing list in an attempt to discredit or draw public attention to it's author.

Discipline:
First violation: 5 days suspension.
Subsequent violations: 5 days suspension.

RULE #4: Do not send jokes to the mailing list without prior approval

There is nothing wrong with a little bit of humor, but please do not post jokes to the mailing list without prior approval.

Discipline:
First violation: 5 days suspension.
Subsequent violations: 5 days suspension.

RULE #5: Do not send virus warnings to the mailing list.

Most virus warnings are farces.  If someone sends you a virus warning, please do not pass it on to the mailing list.  If you really feel that you must warn your friends on the SCOA List, please send it to the mailing list administrator.  If he believes that it is a real threat, he will post it to the mailing list for you.

Discipline:
First violation: 5 days suspension.
Subsequent violations: 5 days suspension.

RULE #6: Do not send unsolicited junk mail to other members.

The SCOA List will not tolerate members who use the mailing list to collect e-mail addresses and then send them junk mail, chain letters, or any type of advertising.

Discipline:
First violation: 5 days suspension.
Second violation: Indefinite removal from the list.

RULE #7: Keep messages to mailing list on topic.

Posts to the list should be about SVT Cobras, the SCOA, or be of interest specifically to SVT Cobra owners.  This is not a place to discuss other types of vehicles, politics, movies, or the weather.

Discipline:
First violation: Warning message.
Excessive violations: 5 days suspension.

RULE #8: Do not post for sale or wanted ads for non-SVT Cobra vehicles or items.

Keep for sale or wanted ads restricted to SVT Cobras.  If the for sale or wanted ad is for an item, part, or accessory, then it should be something that can be used by a typical SVT Cobra. If you want to post an ad for something outside the SVT Cobra scope, or you are unsure if your ad qualifies, please obtain permission from the list owner first.

Discipline:
First violation: 5 days suspension.
Subsequent violations: 5 days suspension.

RULE #9: Do not send private replies to the mailing list.

This mailing list is not a chat room. When you are replying to a post, very carefully consider if your message should go to list or the author.  If you are in doubt, send it to the author. Unless you feel that your personal response to someone will be of GREAT interest to the rest of the group, send it to the author. It is recommend that when replying post that you verify the recipient first. It is easy to get wrapped up in writing a reply and forget to change who it goes to before sending it.

Discipline:
First violation: Warning message.
Excessive violations: 5 days suspension.

RULE #10: Trim your replies.

When replying to a post, please trim the original message AS MUCH AS YOU CAN WITHOUT MAKING IT CONFUSING AS TO THE ORIGINAL TOPIC THAT YOU ARE REPLYING TO. It is also recommended that you delete the standard message footer from the original message. If you do not know what this footer is, just wait, you will soon.

Discipline:
First violation: Warning message.
Excessive violations: 5 days suspension.

RULE #11: Do not send pictures or attachments to the mailing list.

Do not send an attachments or pictures to the mailing list. Although any message that is larger than 16,384 bytes will be blocked, large messages cause long delays for members who use modems to access their e-mail.

Discipline:
First violation: Warning message.
Excessive violations: 5 days suspension.

RULE #12: Watch your subject lines.

Let's talk about subject lines. Subject lines are very important.  Especially to some members who have to sort out 200+ messages at a time.  Always carefully choose a subject that describes the message that you are posting. If you are replying to a message, do not change the subject (exception, putting a "RE:" in front of it). If your response has nothing to do with the original message, then change the subject and tag the old subject line on the end (example, "Brake Upgrades (was: Choosing the correct tire)").  If you are replying to a reply, make sure that you are not putting another reply tag on the message. This way we do not get a thread that turns into "RE: Re: RE: -Reply  -Reply".  If you are posting a message that mentions you are selling something or looking for something, please make it a separate message. If you are selling something, the subject should begin with "FOR SALE:" or "FS:" with a description of what you are selling after. If you are posting a message looking for something then the subject should begin with "WANTED:" or "WTB:".

Discipline:
First violation: Warning message.
Excessive violations: 5 days suspension.

RULE #13: Do not send replies to the list that amount to clutter.

Do not reply to a message unless you are adding something of value to the thread. (i.e. don't respond with nothing other than "ditto" or "me too"). In other words, do not send a reply unless it will be of interest to the others. Keep in mind that there are over 1000 other members on this list. Before you hit the send button, put yourself in the shoes of another member and ask yourself if you think your message will be interesting.

Discipline:
First violation: Warning message.
Second violation: 5 days suspension.

RULE #14: Do not advertise non-SVT Cobra related businesses on the list.

Do not use the mailing list to promote any web page or business unless it specifically caters to SVT Cobras.

Discipline:
First violation: Warning message.
Second violation: Indefinite removal from the list.
